I don't think the breaks have become longer, but there are certainly more of them.
The actual amounts of adverts are controlled to, usually, 7 or 8 minutes per hour.

However much of the programming is from the USA where much more advertising is allowed - such that most US "1 hour" programmes actually only last 42 minutes.
To keep to the 1 hour slots the commercial operators have increased the number of breaks, put in more and shorter adverts - then fill the rest of the advert break with trails for their own services.

    Fiver have increased their ads.

When I was watching Home and Away, they had two ad breaks in a half hour show. I've never seen that before.

If you have a pc ar TV whether you watch tv or not you are still due to pay as they are capable of receiving tv.

Sorry missed this one before - you only need a licence if you actually watch or record live TV.

The adverts on itv are now nearly as long as the adverts the bbc carries for bbc programs now...

That's all very well but I have noticed recently that most of the commecial stations have ad breaks at the same time meaning that even if you are flicking through the channels there is no escape.

On a different track, why is it when 'Drama on ITV1' is sponsered by whoever do we need to have adverts at all?

We've got SKY+ and no longer have to suffer the dreaded ads. I appreciate not everyone wants or can afford SKY etc., but previously we just recorded our favourite programmes onto video and then hit fast forward. The ads drove us nuts but it was a simple way around the annoyance.

We have a Humax box so can (and do!) skip through ads on all non-Beeb channels (the OH even skips through the dull bits on progs like "Dancing on Ice" which takes a 2hr program down to 45mins :D). I like watching CSI on Five, where the ad breaks are all almost exactly four minutes, unlike some things on ITV when you're expecting a long ad break and over-shoot on the skipping!

However, one program I watched recently was the Krypton Factor, which didn't have any "normal" ads halfway through, just trailers, which I guessed was a result of the economic conditions

We all hate ads, and I do skip them or go and make a cup of coffee. But if everyone does this then there will be no commercial TV except the BBC eventually.

I even read somewhere recently that Sky want football matches to change to have 4 quarters instead of 2 halves so that they can show a lot more ads than they are able to at present!!!
