moneysaving barrel pond?

is it one of those rubber buckets you're thinking of using?
Cause my DH has the same idea - though we are prob going to sink it in the ground.
Yes you will need something like a pile of stones for the frogs to climb up and you will also need a good bit of cover eg bushes, piles of stones for them to hide in.
If there are ponds nearby then frogs will find your one - my dad has a big pond which is full of frog spawn and they've now started spawning in a tiny wee pond at the back of his garden too. You may want to collect some frog spawn for someone else's pond though to get things going - note it is illegal now to collect any spawn from the wild.Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
thanks for the tip nodwah about collecting spawn in the wild. i'll have to put in a freecycle request to see if anyone has any? i don't know anyone with a pond tho'. i'll have to ask around.
the container could well be the same one that your DH (not sure what these abbrev all are, dear half????) is thinking of too. it's certainly the cheapest container i've seen for that size. it was my bf who saw it first as a suggestion for my front door to plant my clematis in - you can imagine what i said!!
will you be having a pump in yours? i know it's best to have one as it'll keep the water fresh but i don't know anything about getting this connected to the mains tho'.0 -
I made a water feature in my garden from an old urn which brims over (there is a pump in the water filled hole under some re-enforced rods, lined with a bit of leftover butyl liner). I then covered the edges of the butyl with pebbles set in cement.
Even though the hole the water is in is only about as large as a bucket, it is FULL of frogs!
The frogs migrated from next door's pond!
In the summer, if there is any standing water anywhere in the garden, you will find when you disturb it that a frog will jump out!
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

I can't be bothered with a pump as I'm very lazy - I might get a solar one if I see a really cheap one!Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0 -
