What is the position collecting a new car on the 1st March, when the car to be traded in was brand new exactly 3 years earlier? This means the old car will be out of car tax, insurance and will be needing an MOT.

The new car is from a garage around ten miles away from home.

I'd wing it personally but if your not that sort of person i would suggest you drop it off the day before when everything is still ok. You'll need someone to give you a lift back and then another to the garage in the mirning but it would probably be the easiest way.

Do NOT under sny circumstances 'Wing it'. Ask the garage how they intend to deal with it, for example, at the garage where I work we would normally put someone in a loan car for a day. Any decent garage will do this for you.

  • One of my many jobs has been as a car salesman (boo hiss I hear you cry)

Your salesman should have taken this into account when he did the deal. It would be normal for them to send someone to you with a car and a set of trade plates. An apprentice would then take your trade in back to the garage and you would take the courtesy car or be driven there. DO NOT allow them to chuck you a set of trade plates and say drive it yourself, you will not be insured.
  • The first is a very busy time for these guys and they will all be running round like headless chickens but they need your old car to resell as quickly as possible before it loses any more value so it is in their interest to sort it for you

They have offered a courtesy car the day before but it seems such a fag going over there after work only to return the next day. However, bearing in mind your helpful comments, I think that is the only option.

Looks like your sorted, but THE most important item, is the insurance, factor.

MAKE SURE you do have cover, for the ACTUAL time you'll be behind the wheel & have legally accepted it, as YOUR property.

Now I've just realised maybe it isn't quite so daft after all that some showrooms are open at midnight then, but still a pain for most normal people.

Courtesy car should be fine - in fact i'm wondering if you agree that sale the day before, they can loan you your old one. Either way the insurance is an issue, as your driving other cars clause on your policy is for third party only, and isn't intended for planned use.

I imagine the courtesy car is insured by the dealership, and will not be on pattycakes own insurance (which runs out at midnight maybe).

Check the insurance cover provided for the courtesy car...or phone up before hand and ask.(before it's too late)..there was someone here who told of Citroen offering a courtesy car with a 10,000 pound excess to be the responsibility of the customer  (more excess than the value of the courtesy car !). He was offered more cover for a fee of 20 pounds !!! So make sure you check and make it clear what you find acceptable.
