New bumper needed

Does anyone have any idea how much a new front bumper for a 1996 Ford Escort LX would cost ?

Had a minor bump :( at a roundabout tonight. (Went into them slowly but I felt it) No injuries but other driver drove off and wouldn't stop. I followed for a couple of minutes but lost him/ her. On checking my bumper later I have found a crack on one side so I think I need to get a new one. I'm not too sure whether to get a new one and get it fitted from the local ford dealer or to go to a local garage. Any ideas which would be cheaper and how much please.

I've phoned the police to report it as I didn't want the other driver phoning later and claiming I hadn't bothered to stop. I now have to go to a police station and show my documents. Nearest one to home closed at 6 and the one in the village I work in isn't manned anyway. Very fed up.

No need to buy genuine Ford parts, most car part factors/paint shops will deliver you one - but it might not come ready painted, so you'll need to allow for this.

Maybe £60 ish bumper, same again to paint & £40 ish to fit - although you could do this fairly easily yourself. So a bill of getting towards £200 with VAT.

The other option would be to visit the local breakers yard - shouldn't be that difficult to find a matching bumper to yours and it would be the cheapest option too.

Don't know where you live, but down here in Middlesex we have the "plastic surgeon" who melds bumpers back together without removing the bumper. This gives savings in time and money.
Not sure where you wpould locate them in yellow pages-possibly under one of the plastic headings or car-body repairs. There are quite a lot who repair bumper scuffs
who may not be able to mend your bumper but might know a man who can.
  • Don't go to the Ford dealer, especially for a car of that age (10 years). If it does need replacing, replace it with a second-hand one from a scrapyard. You may also be able to find an independent Ford specialist who could fix it for you.

I had a similar accident around six weeks ago in my three-and-a-half year old Mini. The BMW dealer quoted me £1000 for repairing the bumper and the other damage. I found an independent (a bloke working out of a small lock-up) who did it all for £200. Utterly ridiculous.
