I have been renting my property for nearly 2 years now. It is a 2 bed house. I have a smoke alarm at the bottom of the stairs. This has never worked. I notified the agents of this when I went through the inventory.
Anyway nearly 2 years on it still doesn't work (it seems to be one of those jobs that never gets done) I keep meaning to replace the battery but always forget:rolleyes:
Anyway I am just wondering who is responsible? Is it me or the agent/landlord? I also heard somewhere that if you live in a house there should be 2
 One upstairs and one down?

Get out the phonebook. Look up the fire brigade local to you. Ring their non emergency number. Ask for a home safety check. Chances are they'll fit you one for free.
They will tell you if you should have more.
If it's just the battery then you should change it before you burn to a crisp.0 -
Are you asking who is responsible for replacing the battery? or who is responsible for replacing the entire smoke alarm because itis broken?
If its the former then I suggest you stop playing games with your saftey immediatley and put a new battery in it.0 -
It wouldn't matter who was responsible, if I was living in a house with a broken smoke alarm, I would sort it myself and then inform the landlord.
2 years and you still haven't put a battery in it? Amazing. It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0 -
I have no problem replacing the battery or the alarm itself. I am simply asking that since this has not worked since I received the keys who is responsible for this? Is it the tenant/ previous tenant or the agent/landlord?0

In the time it took for you to ask the question & read your responses, you could have been to the shop bought the battery and fitted the thing!
It wont make any difference whos repsonsbility it is if you die in a fire, you cant point the finger then!
Do it NOW! Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I understand its the LLs resposnbility to fit it but tenants to keep active. As you havent tested the battery you dont know if its broken. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

But the question is why hasnt it worked for two years? Your response seems to indicate it hasnt worked for two years due to it requiring a new battery.0 -
I really don't have any luck with these things! In my previous house, the alarm had a mind of it's own. Thing went off at 2am for no reason and that battery was fine. Did this on a few occasions! And the one before that went off making a cup of tea!
I am going to get the fire brigade out to do one of those safety checks. Has anyone had one of these? Do they check everything or is it just the alarms?0 -

My question is before I received the keys is it not the landlord/agent's responsibility to check that this was working? I don't mind changing the battery (always seems to be last on the 'to do' list) but surely it was there responsibility before I moved in?
I had also reported this to them on the day I received the keys.0 -
Change the battery. If it doesn't work then ring the landlord. You can still get the free fire check.
Please go and change the battery NOW before tonight.0
