Help please - turned down for B&Q job

Options
Hi everyone

I am after a bit of advice please? I applied on the B&Q website for some local jobs advertised. Now all I applied to be was a checkout staff member.

I currently work for a bank in Customer Service and I have ten years experience doing this.

B&Q today have sent me a standard decline letter stating that "my individual profile does not show a close enough match to the required staff profile".

Is it just me or does ten years experience in dealing with customers by telephone and face to face count for nothing? How can I not meet their profile given that I am doing virtually the same job anyway, just in a bank?

I was only able to provide the one reference at the time of the application but have just managed to arrange for another and was going to call them to let them know the details. Could this be a reason they said no? Because I only provided one reference which is my current employer?

Ok I know it is silly but I am quite disappointed as I really want to change jobs - I have had enough of where I am working now. It is a bit of a blow when I am feeling down.

Any advice or thought please?

  • Hi

I think the problem is at the moment that there are just so many people out there looking for work. It's excellent news for employers but not so good for those applying for jobs. As a HR Manager I find that I am having to be increasingly strict on the selection criteria just to narrow the potential interviewees down to a reasonable number. I'm sure that you do have excellent customer service skills but maybe there were a few others who had more relevant retail experience?? Don't get down about it though....I'm sure you will find something soon, it's just very competitive out there at the moment. At least you have a job at the moment and have the luxury of being able to take the time to look.

    Hope you find something soon

    Thanks Skint,

I know and I am grateful to have a job but just after ten years, I need something with a little less sales and more customer service. I would much rather the job did go to someone who needs it to provide for their family.

    Thanks

I have delt with B&Q staff quite a few times and some are extremely knowledgeable, majority of the others do have a fair grasp of methods, preparation and DIY, and very few are DIY/product idiots.

They seem to rotate between the till and walking the isle. Some do have sections. Even the young girl (kid) on the till knew which isle to find porcelain tile sealant in.

Women there do not seem to be particularly glamorous as the is industry is not (compared to bank staff) and the hours and weekend work is often involved.

Think you should cheat and on a quiet day have have word with some of the spotted youths on the tills and ask them how they got in and their background.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

    Hey Donna,

Don't get down about this. There are more jobs out there. You may just have to wait a little longer for the right one to come along. Please see that you are in a fantastic position to be able to earn money whilst looking for work.

I am unemployed and on the job hunt and believe me the rejections are a thousand times worse when you don't have employment at all.

Stay positive something will come along.

Are you sure you want a job at B&Q? I used to work there and it involves 2 weeks training, plus training throughout the year, and to top it all the hours are unsociable and the wages poor!

    Thanks bookduck and widgetP

I do have experience of DIY etc, grew up with my father who was a Joiner and Kitchen Fitter and cousins and uncles all in the same line of work etc so am not totally ignorant about diy etc. I was in my local B&Q and saw a couple of glamourous looking girls around the decor and paint sections. :rotfl:

I wish the banking industry was glamorous! To me just now it is deadly dull and bit stressful. I will hang onto the job however because I do need the income but just would really like something a bit simpler and less stressful.

I do hope you find a job soon WidgetP! Good luck with it.

Hi onejontwo, I am just seeking a simpler job with less stress etc My current job you have to undergo six weeks training and countless training throughout the year on data protection, financial crime, complaint handling, security, fire safety and many many more!

I don't mind working some evenings and saturdays, obviously wages do play a part but I do not necessarily have to stay on the wage I have now, a little less would not be an issue.

Hear hear! I am in exactly the same position, and it is practically soul destroying when you get rejected with no work to back you up.
    Good luck on finding employment!

  • B & Q are a funny lot when it comes to jobs, my OH applied for a position in one store over 2 years ago and was not successful, then 1 year ago he applied to a different store and got the job! very strange!

I know, I think they must like extrovert people because when I did their personality test thing online, it came back and said I only scored 3 which made me an introvert person! I am not introvert really - quiet yes before you get to know me but not introvert!
