Options
is this right?

We've just scrapped my husband's car, so i've just phoned to cancel the insurance policy on it to be told it's going to cost us £45.00 to cancel it  .

Is this right or is there anyway round it? talk about 'rip off britian'

There's no way round it. All covered by the policy ts + cs.

If the refund you are getting for the unused period doesn't cover the £45, maybe you could just leave it. (Though too late if you've already instructed them)

Although it seems unfair, it's a bit of a "ryanair" type business model.

All insurers want to get thei prices down so they come out cheapest on comparison sites, so they do this by stripping out any extras.

It's a bit like the "no frills" airlines, where prices are cheap, but you have to pay for food, luggage, taxes and maybe even spending a penny in future.

So whilst you may feel hard done by you need to bear in mind that all of the "extras" were stripped out of your up front premium to make it as low as possible.
  • That happened to us last year. Cancelled the direct debit and they said the car was still insured until we had paid the cancellation charge. I said the car had been sold and if they wanted to continue insuring it then that was fine by us but if the new owner had an accident, they would have to pay as insurers concerned.

We still had to pay though - just delayed it for a few weeks whilst they got their head around that fact!!
