Nikon extended warranty woes

Options
I bought my Nilkon D80 and 18-135mm lens kit just over 12 months ago and sent away for the free 2nd year warranty.

It was dodgy when I bought it and I should have taken it back sooner really, it kept coming up with an error code to say the lens was not seated correctly, a quick wriggle and the error went and it was okay.

Then it developed other related faults, the shutter wouldn't release when depressed and it made no attempt to focus. However it worked fine when using the remote or timer.

So I sent it back to Nikon for repair under the warranty.

Their first estmate was £32 for a new tube (86p) labour and shipping. There was some confusion at first about the warranty but when I sent it and the reciept to them they said it was okay, it was covered.

But now they have emailed me today to say that they believe it has sustained accidental damage which is not covered by the warranty. I know, am certain it hasn't, its my baby and I really look after it, theres no way its been damaged, it lives in a well protected bag and handled only by me and with care.

I think they are trying to wriggle out of repairing it under the warranty, they have now said it would be £39 + VAT and thats with a 25% discount for goodwill. Whilst not alot of money, I am so cross that they want anything at all. If I thought it had been damaged I wouldn't have a problem.

I have just called and waiting for them to get back to me, they are going to talk to the techy guys again to see what they say about this so called damage.

Has anyone had this happen with Nikon? Can they prove its been damaged accidentally? Maybe it was damaged in transit (I took it to the shop I bought it from and they examined it and didn't see anything) Is it worth arguing with them or paying up even though I feel I shouldn't have to?

Thanks

  • I wonder if before you bought it, it had been dropped in its box or something? Hence why it was never right and hence why they say you have damaged it?
  • Thanks for the reply. I don't know, it was a fault from the very first time I bought it so its entirly possible but I'd never had a DSLR before so I didn't know it was anything to worry about and at the beginning it wasn't as bad and easily resolved.

They still haven't called me back so I will write to customer services.
