Number plate sale?

Hi
I want to sell my number plate - planning to sell the car soon and I don't want to put the number plate on the new car. If I sell this one, does the original number plate that I bought with the car come back? I've never done this before, so if someone could tell me how this works, i've looked at the dvla leaflet and I can't work it out!

I changed mine back to it's original number a few months back.
I went down to the regestration centre and was not expecting to have the same number. The chap came back from the computer monitor and said I am giving you the original one. ( I had not asked )
If you want the original it might be worth the effort and go.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Easiest way is to place the number you want to keep/sell on a RETENTION CERTIFICATE. This is issued by the local VRO, usually, meaning that you'll have done all the messing about, with paperwork, prior to it's sale.

You'll pay an anual fee for keeping the certificate valid, plus the transfer fee, which enables it to be assigned to another vehicle.

More often than not, you'll get the original number back, unless it's very old, when they will issue an age related number, so you won't get a newer looking number, on an old car.

Best get an idea of the value of the reg, before you go through this procedure, to make sure it's worthwhile! 'cos asking price & actual selling price, is sometimes milllllllllllles apart!!

  • They gave me back the original number on the car i just bought just before I put the cherished number on it. The fee for a retention cert is £25 per annum and you pay the £80 transfer fee up front so it is paid when it eventually gets transferred by your buyer. Dont put anyone on as nominee until you have found a buyer then when you have the price - or a good part of it - send it in to put them on as nominee - when you get the whole price - send the buyer the retention cert with the transferee section signed. They are always up for sale on ebay so you can get some idea of prices.
  • Thanks, went to the dvla office and they give me the form to fill in, told me about the £105 fee (80 + retention), thanks for all your help.

I've put my private plate on 4 different cars over the last 6 years and the 'old' car always reverted back to the original number plate, this was despite DVLA saying it may not necessarily revert to the original.

If you don't have the original plate then when you get it made up you have to take the new registration certificate before they will make the plate up.

If you don't have the original actual number plates, the DVLA office will give you a Number Plate Authorisation Certificate with you completed application, to obtain a new set of plates.
