PC crashed this morning!

Hi

Something v strange happened this morning. I updated my ipod programme and it asked me to restart the pc for settings to take affect, which i did, then the thing wouldn't turn on, well i say it wouldn't turn on the light came on with the fan noise but no windows! It went onto the safe mode screen when prompted but wouldn't let me access it? Is there any reason for this, is there anything i should do in case this happens again?

Last time it did something like that i needed a new harddrive!

Carli x

    Is it working OK now?

Could be something like it didn't like the changes the ipod program made so it used the "last known good configuration"

What operating systems are you using? i.e windows 98, windows 2000 or xp etc. This appears to be a software problem the updating of the ipod software may of affected your computer registry. Try and start the PC again and see if there is a option to start from the last known / good configuation. You may have to reload your operating system again.

You might want to check that your ipod program works too, as the changes it made to the registry might have been deleted.

You may want to "defrag" the hard disc also so the space on the hard drive is sorted out as over time the pc writes stuff all over the hard drive so when programmes access data on your hard drive the hard drive has to work faster/harder to get the information.

If you use defrag on xp (is a xp utility) in >start > all programs >accessories > system tools > disk defragmentor

This program will run a test on your hard drisk to see if it needs sorting out. If it does need sorting out it usally takes 40 - 60 mins and you can't use your pc in that time. But afterwards the pc will work better faster and will make your poor hard disk work a bit longer before it dies.

Goto start menu, click run and type this

    chkdsk c: /f /r

It will scan your HDD and ask you to reboot. On rebooting it will scan before XP fully loads-up. It checks the HDD for errors......

    **This may take a while**
