Needing some ideas for taking my two kids away in october, never been abroad with them before - somewhere where there is plenty to do for them (age 8 and 6) -

any help/ideas much appreciated

Perhaps you should start with your budget, that will make it easier for people to suggest things. Presumably this is for half term week?

My and my H went to Lanzarote before we had our LO, a place called Tegiuse (sp?) Golf. We both said that it would be an ideal place to go with children around that age as they had so much there in the day and also the discos etc in the night. We've also been to Mallorca a couple of times when the childrens clubs seemed excellent and they all looked like they loved it.
Just realised this post had been no help at all lol ... sorry!

Camping, or 5star hotel or somewhere in between? abroad as in france or abroad as in America? try and narrow it down a wee bit, are the kids active or rather just chill...what do you want? sunshine, or culture..?

First week in october when schools are off (in scotland anyway) flying anywhere from scotland - somewhere where its nice and sunny with plenty to do for the littles dudes (sports etc) , probably not too far away - spain,portugal , maybe egypt
