PS what time is the party ? If party is not covering main eating time for kids ie lunch or dinner, then chances are they will have had something to eat before so might not need as much. Ours was 3-5 so covered tea-time so food served at 4 to hungry kids. If it is 1-3 or 2-4 might be that kids have already eaten lunch and may not be as hungry. This was a tip I picked up from the entertainer we had booked.

sausages (2-3 each child), sandwiches (1 slice each - most of the savoury stuff doesn't get eaten), chunks of cheese (2-3 each), breadsticsk (1-2 each), loads of crisps or plain popcorn, a few carrot/ cucumber sticks. Bunches of grapes, jaffa cakes or party rings and cake for sweet stuff.

Don't make it too complcated, don't make too much healthy stuff, they won't eat it. Don't bother catering parents - they will nibble whatever is left!

yep, cheese and grapes, had those but they were one of the first to go and I missed out:(
Rachbc, completly agree about not catering for parents, it;s a kids birthday party. When I take dd to other parties I don't expect to be fed, but I do nibble;)

With the hot dogs we warmed them at home and put them in a soup flask ( a flask with a wider neck) and this kept the heat in a bit - LO's can't eat it hot so warm was ok

If no tea or coffee just put out clod drinks maybe buy some fizzy flavoured water - looks grown up ha ha

I never expect food at a kids party but i do expect a cold drink x

  • last time we had a party i priced the food boxes like the ones you get a macdonalds in and thought they were too pricey, so the next time i passed macdonalds i stopped and asked if i could have some and they just gave me a stack of them. it was much easier packing up individual boxes rather than doing several platters.
when your life is a mess light one more cigarette its so logical!!

get up and dance, get up and smile, get up and drink to the days that are gone in the shortest while :T

We bought those for another party and they work out cheaper than plates ect and i printed out characters on stickers to decorate them - My LO loved mickey mouse and it was £3 for 8 plates!!!!!! the boxes were £3 for 12 and with slightly older kids 4-6 years they are great

  • Was unsure if its best to post this here or the families board but I always get my best cooking advice from here so here we go! (feel free o move btw x)

Having a kids break up from school/xmas party tomorrow, and I'd normally buy a few bits and make a few bits but plan to do lots of making today/tomorrow!
So any help on some kids food party ideas?
8 children aged between 3 and 6 will be coming (all girls).

I plan to make some HM pizza's & HM biccy's
One mummy is making a big Victoria sponge, and one mummy is bringing pop and xmas crackers.
So I have a big gap in food for them, any clues what I can make (pref tonight) that will go down well, and not cost much??

Cupboard is well stocked at the min (minus chocolate which I can grab from the shops!) I have lots and lots of flour, eggs, milk, butter and cheese to use up, lots of potato's (but no fryer to make HM chips is there another way that doesn't take to long??)

My youngest DD is going for a playdate 9am till 1pm so I have a good 3 hours to prep the house and get food ready before early pick up at 2pm.

Just got rid of the old dining table, and new one doesn't come till saturday, but I do have the garden table up at the min, problem is I've gone from being able to seat 10 with ease to just squeezing in 4 so I planned to clear the dining room floor and do a picnic style tea party! (2 mummy's staying so will use the table in the corner for them)

Phew sorry for the big message but any help much appreciated :D
    Thanks all x

Has gone to play on her own little world for a bit..... but its ok the voices in her head came too so she's not alone ;)

Have you thought about doing HM ovened potato wedges - much yummier and healthier than chips anyway, and you can make them spicy, seasoned, herbed or plain as your audience dictates. The only downside would be the cooking time - it is rather longer than deep frying!
TBH, with enough home made pizza, they will probably want little else!
