Anyone recommend 1st time car insurance (cheap) for 1st time driver age over 30 in Northern ireland??

I am in the same position as you. I am the wrong side of 30 and passed my test in December 2008. I got a quote for fully comp insurance from Abbey for £385 which I thought was a fantastic quote for first time insurance. Abbey were able to give me a discount because I was a member of Amicus Union, it would have been £518 without this discount.

I tried compair the market and the cheapest was £730 and the most expensive was £4150 :rotfl:

Best of luck and congratulations on passing your test :)

  • I searched the internet for quotes a couple of years ago when moving back to NI and McCarroll McConnell insurance brokers of Ballymena got me insurance £100 cheaper than all the other quotes. My parents have been with them for years. They're worth a call. I'm over 30 female driver but not a new driver though.

This takes some time but in my experience it is usually hard to beat.
    • Read this MSE page and as Martin recommends type your details into atleast five comparison sites i.e. Gocompare, MoneySupermarket, Comparethemarket, Confused and USwitch.
    • Take the most favourable results from each and feed the Supplier details into the Cashback sites maximiser to find the best cashback.
Last year I got fully comprehensive on an ungaraged Ford Focus for £120 and this year only £75!

One word of warning though, as prices and cashback change all the time you really need to follow-through and purchase shortly after getting your quotes.
  • I'm with Axa Open and Direct and have been since I was 17 years old. I've never got a better quote with anyone else and even though the first year after passing can be expensive my quote halved after my first year. but that was a while ago.

i think the number is 02871 310000. is that sad that I know that?!

    Totally agree!!

As everyones personal circumstances are different, everyones 'recommendations' will be different.

I saved £300 this way last year, my wife £200, and just saved my father in law £110 too.
Use Martins tried and tested method - it WILL yield the best results for about 20 mins effort.

did you try open & direct? they don't quote online but in my experience are very good - i had my first accident in 11 years of driving just before christmas and was so relieved to find claiming a completely stress-free experience - which i guess is where it counts. (i have heard bad stories about quinns being a nightmare for claims but never used them myself).
