  • We used to take family holidays all over the south of France and stay in caravans/tents with people like Canvas Holidays etc. It's one hell of a long drive though!

If you're not a mobile home kind of person, then I'd recommend the self catering site holidaylettings.co.uk. I really like the area around Biarritz - should be good for body boarding, I think (correct me if I'm wrong!). Have a look here - http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/aquitaine-dordogne/

Hi, why not the Languedoc area. It has loads to offer in the way of beaches and sightseeing - think Cathar castles, the Canal du Midi, vineyards, medieval Carcassonne etc. Miles of sandy beaches and outside of August the roads are quiet and a joy to drive. Plus it's usually cheaper than the Cote d'Azure - ie you can rent an apartment for 4 on the banks of the Canal for 200 euros per week in May/Jun/Sep/Oct

I live in this area so obviously biased but happy to answer any questions!

We went to the southern part of the Languedoc about 4 years ago - it's a lovely area and the beaches are nice - certainly nicer than the area of the Cote d'Azur that we have since been to.
This year we are heading back to the Languedoc, although closer to Beziers - again hopefully some nice beaches, but plenty of sightseeing as well.

Biarritz. Great surf, great beach, close to mountains for great drives.

We are heading down to the Chartente-Maritime region of france in region of la Rochelle this summer. Not quite so far to drive and same sunshine hours per year (over 2200). Nice beaches and the Atlantic for surfing/body boarding

The section of coast between Marseille and Beziers is my favourite. Less built-up than the Cote d'Azur and there are plenty of other things to do if you get bored of the beach (Nimes is a beautiful Roman town, and Montpellier is lovely). If you've got kids definitely go to the Haribo museum and factory tour.
