Looking for a silent answerphone for night-shift worker.

I am looking to buy an answerphone as a gift for someone who works nights.
I need one that can easily be switched to completely silent for during the day.
Ideally it would have a cordless handset, but realise that it might be more complicated to switch to silent.
It is hard to find one from the basic specifications given, I have tried downloading the instruction manuals for a few but have not found anything suitable yet.
Any recommendations?

I have a cordless BT Studio 2300 phone which you can mute the ring tone on (base and handset controlled separately so our bases are always set to not ring and the handsets are set to not ring after the baby goes to bed)
If the recipient is with BT there's a free answerphone service he can sign up for - is it 1571?Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan
48 down, 22 to go

From size 24 to 16 and now stuck...0 -
I would prefer one with an answerphone, but will look into the BT service.
Thanks for the info on the BT Studio 2300 phone, that sounds like the kind of system I am looking for. Is it simple to mute the ringtone or is it from within a settings menu?0 -
Hello TimBuckTeeth
I'll move your thread to the 'Home Phones' board.

You can mute the base and the handset separately through the menu
OR, our preferred choice
We have the bases set to mute and then switch off the handset - the 'end call' button also acts as an on/off button
So, while the menu is not 'immediate', though IMHO not complicated, turning the phone off is a doddle!Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants - Michael Pollan

My base is set to mute, and I turn my handest off at night. No noise. Or buy from one of the better Panasonic ranges and they bar calls (you choose all/some/emergency etc) from certain times. Works perfectly.
I'd say the easiest thing though is get 1571 and unplug the phone. You'll never miss a message and never be disturbed. BT or your supplier handle the 1571 so it's noiseless if you have the phone unplugged/muted. When you get up, plug the phone in/unmute it, pick up the receiver and if there's a dual tone you have a message or dial 1571.

Thanks, that sounds ideal. I did not know the handset could be turned off, the simpler the better, much quicker than having to go through the menus.0 -
We have a Panasonic cordless which has the facility for a "night mode" As my hubby works nightshift this phone has the facility to programme in times when you don't want it to ring, either on the downstairs one on the base unit or the upstairs one. We therefore have the upstairs one set so it doesn't ring between say 8am and 5pm. It has an answer machine therefore if anyone does phone they can leave a message. The best things in life are free.....0

Thankyou, the night mode sounds like a useful feature. I have just been on the Panasonic website and downloaded some instruction manuals and found a phone with night mode and it has seems to do everything that I was looking for.0 -
