Restoring a cast iron fireplace

Hi everyone,
We have a cast iron fireplace sitting in our shed that has at some point been covered in a silver paint. We want to get this off so that we can use it in our living room as a working fireplace. What is the best/easiest/cheapest way of going about this? Do we have to paint or coat it in anything to protect it from the heat?
sarah.

clean the old muck with Nitromors that you will brush on, leave to work and wash off. When nice and dry, use a special black paste (sold in tubes) in every drug stores or apply "Black Berlin" which you will find in the same shop. Et voila !0
