Financial education to be given in schools would be one for me..

.but why would the banksters blow open their little corrupt cartels.....
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

How about a complete and permanent ban on "betting" on shares and other forms of speculation.

Take shares, the value should be based soley on the return, i.e. dividends - if the company does well, the dividends go up, and thus the value increases. What should be scrapped is people buying shares solely for the potential rise in their value due to takeovers, mergers, etc. where the "little man" hasn't a hope in hell's chance of competing with the insider knowledge.

Likewise with houses. We need to get rid of the speculation. A buy to let should be valued solely on rental returns and not appreciation in value.

Let's just get back to basics. If value of shares, houses, etc is truly linked to returns, ie dividends, rental profits, etc., we wouldn't have all the speculative bubbles etc that cause so much harm.

Isn't every decision in life we make speculative? Starting a business, what subjects to study, which person to marry, whether your basket of shopping might have been cheaper in another supermarket...

    Life is a gamble.....

Isn`t it sad though we are talking like this. I`m just an ordinary bloke with some ordinary mates that talked about some these things 7 or 8 years ago in particular the field of house prices and silly mortgage deals. So how come some pretty unremarkable people like us could see that all this would end in tears?

Personal debt. Yes some got there through bad stuff that they couldn`t control yet many chose to go down this route. Why do I need a new car? Can I exist in a life that doesn`t allow 2 continental holidays a year? I and at least 2 more people I know have managed a life without a 52 inch HD ready tv, I know, it has been hard and although I am deprived I have survived.
  • An appreciation of the important things in life - health, happiness and enough money. You only have to read some of the threads on MSE to hear how people who were forced to change lifestyles because of debt or unemployment now claim to have a higher quality of life as a result. I know I have.
