Worrying bill from EOn

Hey guys

Long time reader but first time poster, we've just had a bill through my door from EON for gas and electricity. No great shakes you might think, however it's a little more complex than that.

It turns out that this bill is for utilities used at my other half's previous residence, which she moved out of five months ago. On exiting the property, EON were informed and issued their "final bill" which was paid. All well and good so we though, however now they have sent a new bill, supposedly after receiving meter readings.

My questions are these:
1) Given that the property has been unoccupied by ourselves for five months, how can EON realistically say that the readings they have been given (assuming that the previous landlord was not lying through her back teeth) are solely due to our usage?

2) How can they bill a meter reading not provided by us to us? Seems tantamount to theft to me.

3) In light of the fact that the final bill was paid, how can they suddenly release a new one? No meter readings were asked for on exit of the property, nor was anyone sent to read the meters.

Any help much appreciated

Peter

  • When you left the property what sort of final meter reading did you give them? Was it read by you or a meter reader?

I think you're saying that you didn't supply meter readings to Eon? If so, the final bill will have been based on an estimated reading and this will be the balance due.

    1) If you didn't submit readings, they will rely on the landlord's so long as they are in line with expected use.

    2) You should have given them a reading.

    3) If you didn't supply a reading, that would explain the delay.
  • The bills in the previous property were my girlfriend's responsibility, she did not provide them with meter readings.

So essentially she's lumbered with the bill?

    Yes, she is.

Only comeback would be if she thought incorrect readings were given but that would be between her and landlord, not eon.
  • Fair enough. That's what EON said but given previous experience with their so called customer service I thought it smelled a bit fishy. Thanks for your help

    Hi peterskelton,

Meter readings can be provided by incoming and out going tenants, or even estimated if none are received from either party.

It sounds like when you first vacated the property the original final bill was estimated. The final bill can be amended at any time if meter readings are updated; there isn’t a time frame for when this can’t be changed.

If you’d like me to check the account for you and make sure this new bill is correct I will be happy to do so. Just send me a Private Message with the address details for the account in question and I’ll get back to you.

    Brian :)
