NTL - USB to ethernet technical problem

Hi, I am on NTL broadband with desktop PC currently connected via USB to the DSL modem. I bought the D-link (dfe-530tx) ethernet adapter card and installed it in a free slot on the PC to create an ethernet connection.

I unplugged the USB connection and using a straight ethernet cable connected the DSL modem to the 'new' ethernet port on the PC.

The card is recognised by the PC however I cannot make the connection to the internet via the ethernet port.

The Network connections window (i am using XP) says that the 'network cable is unplugged'. (which it is not).

Additionally the green LEDs on the D-link ethernet card do not light up which may indicate.....?

I have completed all the usual checks, rebooted, switched off / on modem etc.

Any ideas please, many thanks Mark

PS my aim is to install the Linksys wireless (wrt54gs) modem once I can establish a straight connection via ethernet between the DSL and PC.

The card is recognised and working on the PC however it will not make the connection to the internet via the ethernet port (message is - LAN network cable unplugged). Additionally the green LEDs on the ethernet card do not light up which may indicate.....?

The no green light indicates to me that there is no communication between ethernet card and router/modem.

So you have a D-link (dfe-530tx) with a patch cable going to NTL modem?
  • There is a whole thread ongoing regarding connection of Ethernet to the NTL modem.
It is currently at stalemate regarding whether or not OP has a cross-connect or straight through cable.

An obvious question but worth asking: i assume you have unplugged the usb part of the modem?
Fortune's always hiding, I've looked everywhere......

Judging by how he explains "
I unplugged the USB connection and using a straight ethernet cable connected the DSL modem to the 'new' ethernet port on the PC. "

    I would say so,

Anyway have you tried turning the cable round ( sounds daft but thats what tech support will ask ! )
  • Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Thanks everyone so far, especially Albertross for the cable / modem troubleshooting which I am wading through now.....can't help thinking there must be an easy answer to this, cheers Mark
  • Sometimes a

    start run cmd

    ipconfig /release,

    ipconfig /renew

does wonders, sometimes it does nothing.

is tcp/ip bound to the network adapter?

What model is your DSL modem?

  • is tcp/ip bound to the network adapter? (not sure /understand)

What model is your DSL modem? NTL 250 model no: EO8C007 thats all it has on it.

    thanks Mark

PS I guess that as the green leds on the nic don't light up this is critical to the problem?
  • have you tried plugging it into your router instead..

  • First a bit of background:
ntl require the MAC address of the primary connection to be registered with them, before they will grant access to the internet. Originally this would have been the USB connection with your pc, now that you have switched to the router, you will need to enter this MAC address.

    Resolution:

There are a couple of ways to do this depending on your router and setup.

First you need to find out the MAC address of the router. This should be located on the router, probably on a sticker underneath. A mac address is 12 digit number and consists of letters A-F and number 0-9, looking something like: 00-AA-B9-C4-D3-F2

Next, ensure that your firewall is on and active, then connect your PC directly to the cable modem using and ethernet cable. If you have the two little PC icons in the systray (bottom right of the screen) you should seem them turn green when they have a connection.

Next open up a browser window and enter any site, as it won't matter, you should go straight to the registration page for ntl. Here you should be able to enter the MAC address of the router by adding another computer and following the instructions.

Once that has been done, reboot the CM, then connect the CM to the router via the ethernet cable making sure that you connect the cable to the WAN or Internet port on the router. Then connect the router to your PC.

If you can get that far, you're most of the way there.
