Help! Been paying 2 companies for house insurance!

Options
Have just dicovered we have been paying for 2 lots of house insurance for the last 6 months! Were with Esure, then took out Abbey house insurance when remortgaged last year, but forgot to cancel with Esure.
Does anyone know if there is a way of getting this money back from one of the companies? Could really do without this costly mistake right now!

Any advice greatly appreciated.

I suspect you've got no chance as both have been providing you cover as far as they are concerned. You could try asking on the insurance board as the folks there might have some specific knowledge.

Why would they give you a refund. They have both been providing you with insurance. Mind you, I doubt whether they would have both paid out in the event of a claim. I remember once, when we damaged a camera on holiday and the insurance company tried to get us to claim on the house insurance. In spite of the fact that we had taken out holiday insurance.

  • I believe that if you were to claim whiilst being double insured the insurance companies involved would only cover half of the claim each. Therefore you could by left out of pocket. I would cancel one if you can. This would depend upon the companies involved and how you pay/paid as to how much you would recieve back etc. You wouldnt get anything back on months already covered though.

    Hope that helps.
  • Hi,

I had been doing the same thing for about 6 months without noticing as all my insurances were set up by my mortgage adviser, and my home insurance had 6 months free. As soon as I realised I was paying buildings & contents insurance twice, I rang up to cancel and explained the situation, and have been told I'm entitled to a full refund - haven't had it yet though, but you can try at least.
  • I believe that if you can prove the dual insurance, you can normally always get a refund. This is from experience in handling complaints regarding this matter.
