my car is worth about £400 max, we do not use it for work but it is important for me to keep it if i can as we go and see family etc... will i be allowed to or can i put it in a member of my families name so i get to keep it or is that frowned upon??? or are we allowed to make an offer to the or... really want to keep it if i can...
thanks again all your help has been totally great:j

This question comes up time and time. If you don't need it for work then it's probably a gonna, The OR's from what I can gather do not seem to have a definitive policy on cars and some BR'S get to keep them and some not. As for changing the keeper that may well be deemed dodgy, if you are to go BR soon. Someone may well clarify some points later.Better to be poor than a slave to wealth

If it isn't necessary for work it's likely you will lose it, no matter how much it's worth.
You can't transfer it into the name of a relative because that would be seen as disposing of an asset.
You may be able to make an offer to the OR to buy it.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

the OR will tell you off for switching over names as thats disposing of assets and they can find out.
ive just had my car exempt, i didnt use it for work but i was basicly an unpaid carer for my nan and did state that on the forms but first of all the OR said sorry you are not allowed the car but seen as its a low value you can get a third party to put and offer in for it. but just found out they have changed their minds
now this is the tricky part as some people have had to pay 50% of value some less, it doesnt matter that it costs them more to take away and sell it. but if its in quite a poor condition ie dents scratches you can argue the case that it has a lesser value than the parkers guide, but the thing to do is think how much you would be willing to pay and start at 10-20% of that and work up, but be prepared they may ask for 50%
alos it depends on the running costs whever you can afford it ie insurance/petrol/maintence is also a deciding factor if the OR looks at your soa and thinks your budget would be to tight with the use of a car he can take it.
it all depends on the OR whever you can keep it or not and you wont find that out till you declare it and have your OR interview
my advice is be prepared to have to make an offer when it comes to cars

Just out of interest, does the OR check the DVLA for everyone?
I sold my car 3 weeks before BR (was unaware I was going BR and it was a banger so only got £200), the forms asked if I had a car, I put down no, and that was that. If the OR had checked with DVLA he would have seen that I sold my car very recently and surely pulled me up about it?
Do they always check?Come ride with me, through the veins of history...

Hi, just wondering about similar thing. I helped my aunty with BR forms and went with her to court. She has OR interview tomorrow and she worried about car.
She has rover worth 1200ish. She does not work but recieves carers allowance for her brother who has down-syndrom. When helpin with forms i tried to justify on the reasons bit the need for car - we live 20 miles from shops and hospital (where she makes regular visits) and there is only a bus every 2 hours, going to local town is 4 hours round trip!! She is also the contact for his day care centre and is often called to collect him etc. She also cares for my nan who is 86 and not in great health.
Anyone had similar situation (needing car to care etc) and been allowed to keep car??
Thanks
Tim

with regards to cars, my car was purchased by my husband when we separated as he took the family car and didn't want his daughter having to wait around at bus stops every day to get to and from school. As I didn't actually pay for the car will he be classed as the owner even though I'm the registered keeper??
Also my daughter has a history of asthma and ear nose throat infections, she had her tonsils removed in August and too much time in cold/damp irritates her condition - do you think they would take this into account
Car is only worth £300 anyway..BSC No: 2450 -

I reckon she will be able to keep it as it is a necessity.Better to be poor than a slave to wealth

You will need to prove he bought it, as you are the keeper that may prove difficult.Better to be poor than a slave to wealth
