e-on help please

hi

i've been recieving letters from a debt company on behalf of e-on for a while now. i was on a prepayment meter for my electric when they were powergen. when i left they sent me a bill for £70. when i asked why if i was on a prepayment meter, they told me it was because nobody had come out to manually change my meter when the prices went up. i phoned them again today and told them i would be getting advice before paying. as far as i was concerned, i'd paid for the electric before i used it and shouldn't have had any outstanding bills when i left. surely that is there fault, not mine. do i have to pay??

thanx, tina

Well, yes, I would think you do. You've only paid part of the cost in advance and there's a balance due.

Yes, you are liable to pay. With some prepayment meters the price changes are made manually - they clearly can not do this simultaneously with every single meter in the UK on the one day. Would you rather an even higher service charge to accommodate such temporary staffing costs?
  • i've always been on prepayment meters, changing companys a few times. both gas and electric prices have gone up and down over the years, but i've never had anybody come out to my meter unless i've had a problem with it. it's not truly pay as you go then is it?? you pay higher rates and can be left with a bill when you leave

Yes, you can. You're paying towards the electricity used and, if you don't switch, it all works out when your meter is read and adjusted. You obviously missed out there, but you were paying a lower rate at the time so won't pay any more than you would have.

Not ideal but, isn't that where key meters have an advantage? Not really in touch with prepay but I think that some update when you credit.

    Hi nextyeartina

Debts can build up on Prepayment Meters for a number of reasons. This is particularly true of the old Token meters. The new Key meters are much better. Each case needs to be looked at individually.

If you would like me to have a look at your case drop me a Private Message with your address and Post Code. I will be happy to check this for you.
