1TB Ext Hard Drives

Hello everyone,

I would really like a 1tb external hard drive for my PC but I am slightly neurotic about getting a good deal!

basically I want to get a reliable drive Western Digital, Buffalo etc but for a decent price £90 and below (Prefer £80 and below really!). The thing I would really prefer about it is a firewire enabled port as well as the USB as there is such a significant difference in upload/dload speeds!

Can anyone help??

Cheers

  • Think you are going to struggle to get one under £90 which has Firewire.

    Amazon have this for £107 - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Firewire-eSata-External/dp/B000W9KHOI

I am currently looking at getting a 1.5tb external hard drive and if you are ok with just using USB then amazon are doing a cracking deal (£75) on a 1tb Maxtor drive - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0015M08DG/ref=nosim/2009-digital-photo-frame-21

On a PC, not much noticeable difference between USB2 and Firewire. On a Mac, different story, FW much faster than USB2.

USB 3 is just around the corner, and that'll probably put eSata and Firewire to bed.

(I use WD MyBooks which are excellent.)

No firewire but 1tb for £69.99.

Think there is an Iomega 1tb deal floating around for £69.99 too. Check out hotdealsuk.com

Or buy an internal dirve and a caddy.
  • Thanks for the replies guys...yeah its a shame, it looks unlikely that there is a cheap 1tb with firewire. Any idea of sites that sometimes do great discounts on these e.g amazon/ebuyer

Alternatively, if there was an easy way to get say £30 in amazon vouchers I would very much appreciate it.

See wht this forum has reduced me to..lol I just don't want to have bought it and then 31 days later they drop £20 in price!

    thanks

Do you mean get the vouchers for free? If so, everyone would be doing it!

You can't worry about prices dropping, it happens for everything. If you worry about that you will never end up buying anything. If you are worried about money, get the 1tb drive I suggested for £69 and risk it being slightly slower to transfer your files.

Trying checking on the Maplins website they seem to be doing loads of dealon large external drives plus if you sign up to the news letter you get discount vouchers. Plus if there is one near you have the advantage of being able to buy it from a local shop.

    Hi shimmiman,

You could always buy a hard drive enclosure, e.g:
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/5442974/Cooler-Master-X-Craft-360-External-USB-eSATA-SATA-Hard-Drive-Enclosure-Silver/Product.html?source=9593

and then a hard drive: e.g:
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150245

You can then just buy another hard drive when that one gets full.

Probably what I'm gonna do in the near future.
