Landline connection

I've read lots of posts on the forum regarding landline connection. I've spoken to the Post Office and they are saying that I may have to pay a connection charge but they wont know until they connect the line. One operator said I would definitely have to pay a connection charge as I live in a flat??? I've not heard that one before, I do live in a flat but ti's a house which was concevrted into two flats and not a large block or anything.
I also phoned BT who said that they were able to connect me free of charge.
Am I right in assuming that if BT can do it for free than so can the Post Office?? Do they use the same people to connect the line??
Basically I dont want to go with BT as I'll have a 12 month contract and I want to switch to talk tqalk once its connected.

Is there an existing BT socket in the flat? If so and there is no physical work required onsite to connect you, then you may not pay any charge to BT, as they just reconnect you at the exchange. However to get this you still have to take 12 months line rental with them.
You can't expect BT to connect you without charge so you can take your line rental to TalkTalk...No free lunch, and no free laptop

WOW!!! wrong info given above!!! if there is a BT socket in the property then you may still be liable for a connection charge as no wiring may exist in the local exchange. As stated on bt.com, the connection charge covers internal work (at your home) and/OR external work (at your local exchange, and in your area). Bt will always advise of the connection charge before they carry out the work.0 -

I said that they may not charge if the only work to be done is at the exchange, because they don't have to come out and install a line and master socket. They're basically reserving the right to charge if they find that more than an exchange reconnection is required. No free lunch, and no free laptop
