USA attractions recommendations

We're going to Boston, New York and Washington in December this year.

Boston - 4 days
NYC - 6 days
Wash - 4 days

We want to do lots of sightseeing while we're there :)

We know there's loads to do in New York, but does anyone have any recommendations for Boston and Washington DC?

  • boston - if you have a car there's cape cod.
wasn't overly impressed with downtown (there again, stopped on the outskirts - Woburn)

Boston-really nice pleasant city. Lots of things to see just strolling around. Will you be getting the train to NYC? The Acela express runs a very good service and the views along the way are great. When in Boston you really must eat at Legal Seafoods see

  • I went to all 3 places in the summer - you'll really enjoy.

In Washington the National Zoo if free of charge, it's massive and you can spend a whole day there. Plus all the obvious sites. Don't bother with the Pentegon cos you'll only get to see the outside.

 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
  • Thanks for all the tips!

Yes we're flying Manchester to Boston and Washington to Manchester. We're getting public transport to New York and to Washington - seems really cheap and a lot more interesting!

Seems we'll be at a lot of zoos! There are loads in New York too!

Why do people skip Philadelphia? That place is LOADED with sightseeing and cool things to do. Liberty Bell, Museums galore, Philly Cheese Steak, etc ;)

    Washington,

Guided tour around the Capitol Building is great ( and free!!). But you need to get there early morning to book the tour. Very interesting and informative.

Also, Arlington Cemetary is interesting as well. Guided tours via "trains"around with frequent stops. Hop on and off whenever you get to a stop. Just a short walk across the bridge from the Lincoln Memorial. You can actually see the Pentagon from the house at the top of Arlington.

Also, see the Veterans wall which is in the same area as the Lincoln Memorial
  • In washington go and see the Smithsonian museums. I am not a particular fam of museums but found them fascinating. Saw the biggest blue diamond in the world, Judy Garland's red shoes from the wizard of oz. Check the website and see what interests you. They are interactive and entertaining. The other place I loved was the FBI headquarters where you get shown round by a real agent who will answer questions.

thought legals was expensive and not the best at the one we went to. Another vote for Smithsonian museums at Washington as well as the usual visitor sites
  • hiya,

im off 2 the same places as u in 3 weeks, cant wait!

We go 2 Washington first & although u dont have any firm plans we hope to take in the Capital tour, Lincloln Memorial, the National Archives to see the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson Memorial & the Smithsonian. Will also take the obligatory fotos of the White house etc. May go 2 nearby Georgetown as ive heard its really pretty there.

Next stop on our trip is New York. Have been before so am planning on jus chillaxing & taking in a few neighbourhoods. Booked tickets to see the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, so will probably buy a huge foam finger & eat hotdogs & popcorn that night!

Lastly we visit Boston. I wana do the Freedom Trail over 2 days, so we have time for shopping & detouring during the day. Will go 2 Cheers bar & sit on some stools & shout "Norm!" when the door opens. Bet the staff have never heard that b4! :rotfl:I also want to visit Harvard taking in some museums & Harvard Yard.

I always buy the DK Eyewitness guide books, i find them best & easiest to use.

Hope this is of some use,

    Caroline
