How to obtain details of charges on old accounts?

Hello,
I've read im sure that you can claim back charges on old accounts? If this is the case how do you go about obtaining the account details/charges if you no longer have them?
Would simply writing stating your name, address etc enable creditors to bring up accounts from the past? The proceed from there...?
Any advice appreciated!
