Shock electricity and gas bill

Hi Everyone
I joined Eon in October onto a fixed tariff plan, I have just received my first quarterly bill and we are in shock! From 14th October-24th Feb they have said that I have used 328 kwh primary units and 9176 kwh secondary units the total bill being solely for electricity £1009.52! Now we run a business from home so yes we have computers and faxes on. I have phoned Eon and gone through our appliances and I have switched the lot off apart from freezers etc. In a 24 hours period I have used 21 kwh. During this time I had the computer on for 4 hours, telly on 3 hours, underfloor heating in only one room for 2 hours and then just a lounge light and essentials. Does this seem a normal usage to you.
Also for gas I have been told that for the same period I have used 13307 kwh and have received a bill for £624.60 I have gas heating it doesnt heat the water it is on for 2 hours in the morning and two hours at night, yes it went on during the snow but not excessively.
I am really at my wits end I have gone to the extreme of turning everything off microwaves, TVs are not on standby not using lights if possible and I have still used 21 units during 24 hours.
Can anyone help me I had a new meter fitted in January 2008 could this cause any problems
Looking forward to hearing from you
Tory

Electricity seems normal given the underfloor heating and immersion on for two two hour sessions.
Gas seems normal for what you describe.
No good worrying about the TV on standby with all that heating.0 -
Was the bill based on estimated or actual readings?
Were the start readings accurate at the point the new meter was installed?0 -
Hi
Yes the readings were all zeros when the meter was installed, I don't think we have excessive heating I have friends in the street who's electricity bill has come to £280 and gas £300 and they have heating on far more than me. I only have underfloor heating in my dining room so not the whole house and that heating was turned down yesterday to just 2 hours a day.0 -
OK, this is what I get for 13kwh a day:
Large fridge
Large freezer
Four laptops (one on all day, others 6-12 hours)
Wireless router all day
2 TVs (one 4 hours, one 8 hours+)
One xbox and one sky+
Dishwasher on once
Washing machine on once
Various phones, PSPs, ipods charging
Low energy lights on all over house (there are six of us) evenings
Security light
Stereo on all day
Winter we use dehumidifier couple of hours a day, tumble drier couple of hours a week, five electric blankets on for an hour - up to average 16kwh a day.0 -
I'm probably about the same apart from dishwasher used 3 times a week and washer twice a week, so it does look like my floor and the immersion then I am doing a 7 day test at present so think I shall turn these off switch the water back to gas and see what happens thanks0

Definitely use gas rather than electricity for heating and hot water - electricity is three or four times the price of gas.0

Hi ToryDenton,
Have you checked the start reads from when you transferred to us? Are these the same as the readings your previous supplier closed your account to?
This usage could be correct, all households are different.
If you would like me to have a look at your account, PM me your post code and house number and I will do this today for you.

Its seems like a huge electricity bill. My wife is in all day, so the large LCD is on virtually all day. 2 fridges, 1 freezer, a power shower thats used 4 times daily, dishwasher used daily, washing machine on at least 5 times a week and tumble dryer that's used very occasionally in wet weather. I have my laptop on via the main on 3-4 hrs a day too.
Ive just worked out my bill with Eon. 85 days usage without any DD/online discounts comes to £172.0 -
Hi Helena Thank you for your reply I am currently talking to a rep at Eon, just got to do a seven day reading and get back to them. See what happens all the readings were correct but the bill has shot up over the last year which is why I thought it may be a meter problem. Oh well better start saving I am sat working in my coat because I darent turn anything on.
Thankyou for everyone elses replys so far0 -
