GYO tip of the day planting in guttering and alike

Lots of people are now growing seedlings in guttering which is great aas you can slide the young plants straight into there final planting space with little disturbance.

This is much cheaper than guttering and with shorter lengths easier to move around or sit on a small table.

Ask friends and family for empty fizzy drink/water plastic bottles cut in half length ways and then you have 60cm of planting space. Remember that you need to cut the end off at one end of the bottle so you will be able to slide the contants out at a later date.

The main crop started of this way is peas but you can sow lots of crops this way. Beetroot, herbs, spinach, card, radishes.

Even if you haven't got an area undercover to start the seedlings off you could just use a sheltered place in the garden.

Hope this helps some of you
Kind Regards
Maz

  • just another idea. If you haven't got any empty ones -

Tesco's value water is 12p a bottle so for a 3 metre row you would need to buy 5 bottles for a grand total off 60p

Another way of using the 'sheltered' aspects of the bottle is to cut a flap lengthways in the bottle - it can then be used as a mini greenhouse. Then when you're ready, cut the end off the bottle and slide seedlings into place.

Yes of course that would be good. I guess just sitting the top half on top would be good although may blow off so maybe don't cut all the way round so it can be bent back over.

    Does that make sense:rolleyes:
