Safest way to pay house deposit

Hi,

Shortly going to be paying my solicitor a deposit for my first home purchase. I know there are a variety of mechanisms for doing this eg Cheque, Bankers Draft or BACS, Chaps, Swift transfer.

What is the safest way to do this? Im aware some of these incur charges (eg CHAPS) but which method is the most secure? E.g. can these electronic transfers be evidenced as proof of payment etc?

Many thanks,

can't you just pay it by using your debit card/cc???

or can you not do it that way??
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right
  • Our deposit is being transferred via BACS
It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.
  • My buyer sent an agreed deposit of 5% to my solicitor who the same day passed the same money to my vendor.
On the other hand that day I sent my solicitor the stamp duty I had to pay by CHAPS.

I paid by CHAPS as advised by sol - maybe because it was a pretty big deposit though (over 50% of value of house). It cost me about £30 in bank charges but that didn't seem much in the greater scheme of things - and the solicitor emailed me as soon as it came through to put my mind at rest. Why not ask your solicitor what his/her customers usually do?
