Cheap self catering in or around St Ives

We want to go as a family to St Ives or immediate area for a week of the school summer holidays i.e July/August. We don't really want to go in a caravan on a site, so have looked at cottages and apartments via the web and through agencies. The lowest price is around £600 and it just goes up and up! I realise it is peak season but there has got to be something cheaper - any ideas???

Even caravans are £500+ in the school holidays weeks in Cornwall.
I would love to go down there myself in August ( with my partner and child), but silly self-catering cost means the cheapest way would be bed and breakfast ( not really what i want).0
