Hyperthyroid cat

After 3 years of taking cat to PDSA telling them it was too thin, it's heartbeat was raggedy, her fur shed as soon as you touched her and she was getting thinner all the time, the vet decided that now it is her 10th birthday, she now fulfills the criteria for a thyroid test. Unsurprisingly, the test showed she is hyperthyroid and the other vet there demanded to know why I had failed to get her treated before.

I kept my temper and didn't make any more than the comment that the senior vet had been telling me I was simply projecting my own concerns about my excess weight onto her and she was a healthy cat for the previous 3 years I had been bringing her in. (implying that I was wasting the charity's money as well as his time)

The new vet also noticed that she had a lump in her throat. The previous vet hadn't even examined her because she wasn't old enough to have it. Three weeks on medication and she's already a changed animal, but the lump is still there.

So tomorrow morning she goes in for a thyroidectomy. My poor baby.

I'm worried.

  • Just want to give you a big hug for tomorrow and bit of re-assurance. My 15 year old baby was loosing loads of weight and the vet said she needed a thyroidectomy. We were really concerned about putting her through a major opperation at her age, but everything went fine. It has slowed her down a bit and she is looking more like the old cat that she is, but we know it was the best thing for her. Cost us an arm and a leg, but I dont care. My little girl still has good quality of life ahead of her.

my cat george had an overactive thyroid, he didn't have his thyroid removed but he lived for four years after diagnosis quite happily on controlled medication. i hope it all goes well tomorrow
  • Hi jojo - how did the furry one get on with their op? I've been thinking positive thoughts for them.
  • She looked a bit shell shocked about 3 days after the op, spends most of the day sat under my desk on a cushion, but she's getting FAT!
