Help ! Is my gas usage normal ?!!
Hi,
We moved into a detached house on 10th Jan. Since then we've used 390 cubic metres of gas - which by some quick calculations on another site, works out to be around £170 !! - in seven weeks !
The only gas appliances in the house are the central heating (new-ish boiler, hardly ever on as I'm worried about the bills), and a gas fire in the living room (on quite a lot as we're keeping the one room warm and letting the rest of the house be cold).
Surely this can't be right ?

That's cheap and quite normal! Wear more jumpers, I'm afraid.0

I was wondering exactly the same thing after just receiving my SHOCKING gas bill of £237.23 today. The reading was estimated so I quickly rushed out to the metre to get my "real and obviously much lower" reading, only to find that to my horror, it had actually been UNDER estimated by about 30 units. Hmmmmmm.... not happy to say the least!!
I can't believe how much it's going up! I'm in a 3bed semi, with gas central heating only, everything else electric......0 -
Gas fires may not be economical -especially if it is a living flame one.Self Employed, Running my Dream Jobs0

That usage does seem a little high if what your saying about only using a single fire is true.
It works out at around 85kWh per day, with an average gas fire rated at 3kWh then using it for 10 hours daily still only adds up to 30kWh per day.
Do you shower or bath? How many times daily and for how long? This I assume comes off the combi boiler.
Between a family this can easily add an extra 20kWh daily.
Plus putting the heating on for even an hour per day in a cold property can easily consume another 15-20kWh.0 -
For 85kwh a day we get heating in the evening, hot water for six and cooking. Not this January, though - we've been using well over 100kwh a day.0
