Would you make a profit selling kittens?

  • What you say sounds harsh but I do agree with you. I forgot to add in my previous post that I wouldn't be willing to risk the health of my cat either. The thread about hand rearing kittens just goes to show that breeding can end up costing you a lot more than just money and I am sure the the OP of that thread would agree that it just isn't worth it.

No i dont think you can make profit from selling kittens. I also think its wrong. my dog had puppies a few years ago. Quite different I know and it was not planned and we were not in it for the money infact we were out of pocket. My dog had a ceaseran else we would lose her & the puppies. And then she was done and my male dog was also done. Along with food etc it soon adds up. I'm no pet expert and I have not read other replies. But I think your friend should think incase things go wrong problems with birth of the kittens etc. I could never let my cats/dogs have kittens or puppies. It was so much hard work and was horrible to part with them.
I would also like to add no amount of money is better then your friends cats health. Your friend also has to think what IF something did happen to her cat giving birth etc. I know its a totally different thing but when my dog was in labour she only went the vets to get checked out and ended up having a caeseran. Seeing my dog like that was horrible and it was also horrible when the puppies went there new home. Your friend also has to think if she gets too attatched .. I also dont think its fair on the cat in my opinion. There are plenty of cats/kittens out there who dont have a home already
Proud mummy to 3 beautiful children who I love so so much :oxxxx

Baby girl due april 2016! cant wait to meet her. xxx
  • I currently have three cats (all from the cats's protection league). The idea that someone is thinking of breeding more cats for financial gain abhors me. The argument that if you pay for something makes you less likely to get fed up with it and dump it is totaly disengenuous. If computer games cost roughly the same price as a kitten how does this make them any less throwaway?
  • Absolutely NO! A cat is for life, not just (to pay) for Xmas!

There are plenty of cats in rescue centres requiring homes. Pet shops shouldn't be allowed to sell kittens and private sellers shouldn't be advertising them in newsagent windows, etc. There are too many people wanting them because they're cute, but they don't realise the costs involved in annual vaccinations, microchipping, neutering, and flea/worm treatments. Not to mention the time required to house-train and keep them stimulated while they're too young to go out.

If you home a cat from a rescue centre or through Cat's Protection they will have had blood tests done, been neutered, chipped, vaccinated ... so you know you're getting a health-checked cat. Also, you often get 4-6 weeks free PetPlan (I think) insurance which may cover existing conditions such as diabetes if it's older and if you renew within the free period. All that's suggested is that you make a donation to the rescue centre or charity (e.g. £60) to roughly cover their vet costs.

If you purchase a kitten from a private seller or even a pet shop you'll still have to pay all these costs (well, if you care about the cat) on top of the £50 you paid for a kitten that cold have contracted flu or other disease from the mother and subsequently have to be put to sleep! So many sad stories I could tell you.

OMG - stop it's so early! LOL

I love cats, but not irresponsible owners.

A friend of mine has a cat and she would like for it to have kittens.

I believe (but I may be wrong) she would like to make some money from this. The cat is just a tabby, I believe, not a breed. Can you actually make any money from this?

Another thing is that she does not know if her cat carries any genetic illnesses and I doubt she will get this checked out first will she?

It's such a shame. I see tons on Gumtree. People do not think but money talks so sod the animal.

You only have to read cases like those two puppies that were saved by a passer by when dumped on that icy pond that people cannot cope once the litters are born. they just dump them like a bag of rubbish instead, it's disgraceful and it's about time the government did something like force breeders to have their kittens/pups spayed/neutured before people buy them.

    Absolutely agree!

Do we still have dog licences? I think potential owners should be 'checked' before receiving an animal licence and all cats/dogs should be microchipped/castrated ... and some of the owners! lol

If all breeders of dogs and cats had the litter spayed/neutured then we wouldn't have so many in rescue centres and we wouldn't have no more kittens or pups drowned or dumped. We wouldn't see all these crosses of kittens and pups on Gumtree or other free advertisements.

We don't have dog licencies anymore but maybe we should have a licence to keep any animal and if people were forced to pay out say £100 a year to keep an animal then maybe we wouldn't see so many neglected and ill treated animal cases.
  • I personally think the price of neturing has to come down or free .

Its all well and dandy for these people who care for their pets that then go onto get them done they would look after their animals no matter the cost.

The bad owners will not get them done due to any spaying costs ,but not be too bothered about isolation when the girl is in heat.

For all the money that is pumped into rescue's and there are masses of them, would the money not be better used at preventative measure, (i know rescues would still be needed) All dogs/cats to be netured for free, this in turn would then cut down on the amount of unwanted pets and less rescues needed.

No matter what is done, there is always going to be the people who are totally irresponsible, but hopefully it would limit them..

Is £25 and often a promo rate of £5 too much for you? If so, you shouldn't have a cat.
