£900 used in 3 months!

Hi there im new and wondered if anyone could offer some advice.
My gas company audited my account in january and told me i was £214 in credit but would only offer refund when new bill and meter reading was given.

Gave new meter reading online and it came up in red writing am i sure this was correct as it wasnt what they expected.

my previous meter reading estimated was 4139
i read my meter today and it was 06085

rung up gas company and he was shocked about big difference in meter readings. He billed it again and it says that i have used £900 in 3 months. The man at gas company doesn't believed Ive used that much as they read my meter in november and it was 3715.
My account has been put on hold and i have to take meter readings twice aday for 7 days.
He said some people dont even use that in a year.

What iw ould like to know is if anyone else has experienced this and what happens after you give them meter readings for 7 days?

many thanks

  • Do you live in a flat? I'm just wondering whether the person that read the meter in November, read the wrong meter.

Also, before November, when did you last read your meter? Did the November reading obtained by your provider seem reasonable to you based upon the readings you took prior to November?

Look at your meter - is it metric or imperial? Ask your gas company whether they're charging you for metric or imperial units (they convert them to kwh). If you have a metric meter and they are charging you for imperial, your bill will about be three times higher than it should be.
  • I live in a 3 bed house.G as company cant understand why the meter is saying ive used that much.I dont even have a gas cooker just gas central heating.
  • My meter is metric. The meter reading done in november was reasonable for me .Thats why this one is a big shock.

Sounds like it's metric and the bill the amount correlates to this too.

Can you post all your actual (A) readings and dates from the past year or two, so we can calculate your average usage in KWH over previous quarters? Have you checked that the serial number of the meter is the same as on the bill?

  • Yes meter has the right serial number.
Friends brother works for british gas and has gone through the last 6 bills of mine and has found they have changed there meter reading on of the bills.

Do you think i would be expected to pay for it when its their mistake.?
