Dial ICE in case of an emergency

Wasn't sure where to post this so please feel free to get it moved to a more appropriate forum.

I received an email today reminding me about the ICE in case of emergency campaign set up with the support of Falklands war hero Simon Weston.

The idea is that you store the word "ICE" in your mobile phone address book, and against it enter the number of the person you would want to be contacted "In Case of Emergency".
In an emergency situation, ambulance and hospital staff will then be able to quickly find out who your next of kin are and be able to contact them. It's as simple as that, and for more than one contact name you can use ICE1, ICE2, ICE3 etc.

Just thought it would be good to remind people about this.

Next time I have a life threatening accident, the last thing I would want is a paramaedic going through my phone trying to find someone to contact, that is NOT their job. Everyone managed to cope before mobile phones were ever invented.

Oh, I don't know. I have something similar on my phone "Help Out My Emergency" or HOME for short.

To put a different perspective on it - we had a talk from our local community beat bobby, he said they find it useful. Take a situation where you've had a few too many sherberts, the police are patrolling the exit to the pub / club / whatever. You're not particularly causing any problems, but you're too far gone for them to let you make your own way home. They can call your ICE number and get someone to come and pick you up and take you home to bed. Far easier for everyone, the alternative being escorted home in a taxi ( in case you're sick or something ), or having to spend the night in the cells for your own safety. This may be bullsh*t, but it's what the PC told us.

( Oh yes, and I think the idea also includes the fact that "home" may in fact not be who you want them to phone, for whatever reason - just like "wife" or "mum & dad" etc. )

Surely its not the paramedic that would take advantage of this excellent idea, but later on, in hospital or whatever. Sure, we managed without mobile phones, but now that we have them it is surely stupid not to use them to the best advantage.

On the occasions I've found a mobile I just call "Home" or "Mum & Dad".

this is a great idea, but causing problems in the phone book.

if i have a number set as ice1 and then the same number under the name of the person, it doesnt show the persons name when they call you or text you or even when you call them, it instead shows the number of the person you are trying to call.

try it and see what u think.

I've always wondered about that. I mean, if I were to be hit by a bus, my pants would be unlikely to be clean, even if they were freshly pressed and sparkling not two minutes earlier.

A simple way around this is to put ICE followed by the persons name. Negates the need for two entries then aswell. I have this on my phone with my partners number. I just have 'Kat ICE' in it. The good thing about my phone though (Nokia N95 8gb) is that when you start to search for a name it wont just look for the first name it will search surname. So even with ICE as the second part of the name, it finds it IYSWIM.

Reminds me of an old quote I heard again a while ago.... "No, of course I want scared... but someone !!!!!! in my pants though" :D
