Drink Driving

My son did a very silly thing when he was just 16, he got arrested for drink driving whilst messing about on his friends 50cc moped.

He received an 18 month ban and a number of points on his licence (although he did not have a licence then), shortly after the ban finished he passed he driving test. I have always had him on my insurance (naturally I declare his conviction), he now wants to build up a no claims bonus in his own right, are there any insurance companies that will except a 20 yr old with a DD conviction?

Appreciate any help.

There will be insurers that will insure him - at a cost, it is just whether he wants to pay the premium that he will be charged for his conviction.

I would probably try and convince him to stay where he is on your insurance until he doesnt have to declare. (5yrs I think) He will be a little older then and it will mean a late start to his road to a full NCB but he will be saving himself a load of money.

The other thing maybe to get yourself with an insurer that allows a named driver to build up there own no claims. (There is an advert on TV at the moment for this but not sure if they are the only insurer)

Unfortunately He is going to find it very very hard to get Insurance and if he does it will be very expensive. This is one conviction that the Insurance Companies dont like. He could try the following companies they may be able to help....

    https://www.performancedirect.co.uk

    https://www.adrianflux.co.uk

    https://www.peart.co.uk

    https://www.directchoice.co.uk

I hope these help and if he doesn't manage to get insurance, tell him not to drive without it as the penalties are even harsher these days. They can take his vehicle and also ban him again....

    Good Luck

(P.S..dont be fooled that he doesnt have to declare the conviction after 5 years...some companies ask if you have ever been disqualified whatever the time limit!!!)

  • Did you know that 20 /30% of car accidents are caused by Drink Drivers?
And that unfortunately this means 70/80% of car accidents are caused by
    Sober Drivers?

  • Hi - here are a few more names which should be worth trying for your son

postoffice.co.uk who give £50.00 cash back from their competitive rates
    motorquotedirect
quotelinedirect (beware of their spam ! )
    dna insurance
    elephant.co.uk

Off the top of ones head you are looking at around 1k if you live in a rural patch to cover a 1.0 or 1.1 car.Don't forget to add mum or aunty as an extra driver as this should trim the price

Getting a car in a low insurance group could only help. It may not impress his mates but image isn't everything!

  • To build up No Claim Bonus you could try Direct Line as they are now stating that any named driver on a policy would be regarded as building NCB.

    https://www.directline.com

Don't know if they would take your son on but worth a try.

I have just changed to them for building up daughters NCB and the premium was one of the cheaper ones and is better due to NCB build up.

I think the catch here though is that you have to insure with them to get it but after 1 year you get a renewal notice with however many years NCB you have earned so would work out cheaper in the long run if you can get it.

I have heard that a few Insurance companies are thinking/doing this but Direct Line are the only ones I have found.
    I am not always right,

But I am never wrong !!
