What kind of science type jobs would you be looking for? Lots of research labs apply for summer grants to host students to do research. Am not sure about forensic labs.0

Hi,
most forensics labs will not take any work experience students, especially not coroners office! As they are dealing with cases of suspicious deaths for the most part they do not allow members of the public to work there without security checks, etc.
I was planning to do a masters in human osteology (im an archaeologist) until my funding options ran aground!) and found that even with good references from senior academics work experience was very difficult to come by.
sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
Good luck with forensics though, its fascinating!0 -
It many not help, but we have had a number of guys around the labs during the summer on Nuffield bursary's which paid them. So they might be able to help out.2 + 2 = 4
except for the general public when it can mean whatever they want it to.0 -
I did a Nuffield bursary a few years ago. You apply as an individual but with a named lab in mind. Find somewhere you want to work and talk to them about it. It doesn't pay brilliantly but it was good experience and as they are competitive it looks good on your CV is you later want to do a post grad course!0

I know i will not be able to get any forensic type job during the summer. I was just looking for like labortaory work in any science field, as we cover a wide range of different scieneces on my course, its bearly any forensics. I have work experience in a lab from last summer, but its jst hard finding summer jobs. Where abouts can u apply for that nuffield thing?0

The above address should interest you. Unfortunatly the deadline for applications was Valentines day! I wouldn't worry too much though. Try looking for Laboratory Technician jobs from agencies liked reed etc. The major sectors of the NHS uses these agencies more over the summer.

Ring your local Hospital and ask to be put through to Haematology or Biochemistry or Microbiology. Unless you like the smell of formaldehyde in which case ask for Histology (aka Histopathology). Ask them for a work experience lab placement. DON'T ask personnel / Human resources just ring ALL your local hospitals and ask to speak to the Chief Biomedical Scientist or Senior Chief Biomedical Scientist in the department you have been put through to - if you wanna know what these are go here https://www.ibms.org it's their regulatory body the other one is the Health Professions Council http://www.hpc-uk.org/
quick tip - DON'T phone microbiology BEFORE 11:30am as they are all very busy reading the plates that have grown overnight and it will take them until then to have a breather. Heam and biochem you can call them during regular office hours and they should be OK as will Histo.
Hospital labs LOVE work experience students they are cheap and you can get them to do all kind of stuff in the name of science - I know I was that senior staff member!!
You could also try Corinth Healthcare - they are THE top science recruitment lab technician agency. https://www.corinth.co.uk

University labs often have students over the summer too. I'd try your 'home' instituion first but others may take you such as:

Also worth trying the local blood donor service. The regional labs would probably be happy to have summer students. they also sometimes advertise for part time (10 hours a week) staff at reasonable pay to work in the lab0
