Alternative to Wall Tiles?

My husband and I are re-furbishing our bathroom (a right headache, we have had to completely gut it as it is the downstairs extension of our Georgian house).

What I was wondering is is it absolutely necessary to put floor tiles on the wall next to the bath. We are installing an original roll-top bath so the bath itself won't be against the wall. I'm guessing that we could use painted wooden panelling as well but is there any paint available which is waterproof enough to protect the plastered walls? I would like to think that we won't splash the walls but as my hubby likes to wallow around in the bath like a hippo I'm guessing that that would be tempting fate!

good afternoon.i would recommend using a KITCHEN AND BATHROOM paint.I have painted a bathroom wall in this and had no problems in 4 years.The one i bought was wilkinsons own brand but they are widely available in all DIY shops.HOPE THIS HELPS
