Sky +HD for £49 - umm no its not available

Options
Living in an extended household, my sister in law brought sky with her when the family moved together to the "new" house. Naturally she lives in her part of the house and we live in the rest of the house. My sister in law agreed that we could enjoy the service so we ordered sky multiroom.

My sister in law loves her sports so she upgraded to Sky+HD - we stayed with the "standard" sky, but recently we bought a 42" HD ready TV. Great - all we need is the HD box and WOW there is an offer of HD for £49, G R E A T!!

Here is the rub though - Sky treat existing customers as dirt - if you have one HD box you must pay the full £199 for the second box. I spent an hour on the phone to Sky speaking to "customer services" and eventually to sales. I was told repeatedly that the offer was not available to us and if we wanted to we should contact there "Cancellation" department and they maybe able to bend the rules to keep us as customers.

Naturally I can't do that - its my sister in laws contract and why should she be put through that to move to Virgin for an inferior HD service?

Customer service and client retention - words not understood by Sky!

O2 however do offer to upgrade your contract with the phrase that they treat existing customers better - SKY TAKE NOTE!!

  • whilst I understand your frustration, it is clearly written in the terms that the price is only available on your first HD box. I would have liked to take advantage of it too

On your other point, my wife recently left O2 after they messed her about when she tried to upgrade. Swings and roundabouts really.

Whilst generally true, that's a bit harsh. Existing customers can get a heavily subsidised HD box, but only one. They have to draw the line somewhere - they entitled to not make a loss on every box just because you're paying an extra £10 for multiroom.

Now why existing customers have to pay £30 HD installation whereas new customers get it free, that's odd, given that if you've got Sky+ already it's just a box swap+register....

We have Sky Plus in two rooms plus another room with just 'normal' Sky. I have found it fab and was very tempted with the offer of ONE £49 HD box plus free installation.

Are you saying that I will have to pay £49 PLUS £30 installation? I realise I will also have to pay an extra £10 per mont for the HD bit. If that is true what if I used my charm on the phone(!!) and tried to get the £30 waived. Do you think it is worth a try. Cheeky beggars charging existing customers for installation if it is true!

Actually thats a good price, they told me I would have to pay £259!! I don't think it's right, as I've already paid the full £300 for my first box, it should be one HD box at special price per account. However, Sky won't budge, and as you've found, don't care about existing customers.

Unless you take out multiroom, yes. I'm sure they changed this a few days after the HD £49 offer came out because I originally had free installation but my wife wouldn't let me press the order button ;)

Bloody cheek given that many Sky+ customers could do it themselves if they just were just sent the box through the post.

Agree, I could do the installation myself if it was just a matter of taking out one cable and putting it in the new box. I always find being nice to people brings out the best in them so I might well see what the can do about waiving the installation. I also notice that if I order on the Website that you get the first months HD subscription free

Just tried to call Sky. Wont move on waiving the installation charge. They did tell me that they are having loads of complaints re this. However I guess the box is cheap. Four of us went to Pizza Express at the weekend and our bill was nearly £60 with drinks, garlic bread, puddings etc so you dont get much for £50 nowadays.

I have not ordered it but I think I will (even with the £30 installation charge) as it is overall a good offer.
  • By the way OP, you can buy a HD box from Tescos or ebay, it doesn't have to come from Sky. Although you still have to tell them and pay the £9.75 pm.
