Extra Leg Space With Monarch?

Hi,
I have a holiday sorted out and now just left to book the flights. I had planned to fly with monarch, however after reading their website you only get 28" legspace and its an extra £20 per person, each way for an extra 6". I have never really had a problem with legspace before (always flown with whoever thomson uses), however last year on the way back the seats seemed really close and small. I just wondered if anyone could tell me what the standard is and if their is anyway of getting extra leg space free or cheaper?
Also anyone know anyway of getting any further discount or cashback with Monarch?

Yes he's a Monarch Engineer although I'm sure he has said before that Monarch a one of the more generous airlines
