I'm going back a few years but once one of our party couldn't come on the holiday we had booked. We were able to change it so that someone else took the place but we did have to pay a fee. Can't remember how much as it was some time ago.

Why doesn't he speak to the Travel Agent/Tour Operator involved?

If its a package and not going within the next 8 weeks he can do a name change usually for a fee of £30or£40 or cancel and just lose his deposit. If your lucky the tour operator may do it for free depends who you get. Its a different matter if its airline tickets and separate accommodation etc sometimes airline tickets are non changeable non refundable, as above first point of contact should be who he booked it with to discuss his options.
  • The holiday is with Thomas Cook and is in September

How lucky for your friend at the moment thomas cook are doing 1 free amendment per holiday ie change a name free, or change the holiday to next winter (summer 2010) aren't on sale yet so the choice is his really take someone else or delay it. I must state this is only on the thomas cook group ie manos airtours panorama etc not flexible tripsor any other operator ie thomsons, 1st choice booked through thomas cook he'll have to pay.
One last thing is he the lead name on the booking cause if not unless his wife tells them he can deal with it, then he can't do anything about it due to data protection.

If his wife is the lead name she might decide she wants to take someone else!

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end
