can you be made redundant by a freelance boss?

I'm being made redundant to cut costs. I work for a company as an employee but my boss has always been freelance of his own choice. Last year we were both shortlisted for his position (there was fierce competition, and lots of applicants) but he was successful. I can do his job. Is this allowed to happen? I understand that it;s my role that is being made redundant but is a company's priority to its employees?

I'm hoping I could use this to negotiate a better redundancy package. Any advice would be appreciated.

You are making a lot of assumptions here.

For example your boss's position may not be available any way.

Lots of companies keep freelance staff on to the end of their contracts while making permanent staff redundant due to the terms of the freelancers contract. When the freelancer's contact comes up for renew, due to cost cutting that contract is not renewed.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p
