I've had many refunds from the trainline.com at work when someone has suddenly changed their mind and decided not to travel (even after the event!). I believe this only applies to Open Return tickets and they will deduct a £10 charge but these tickets are the most expensive. (occasionally we've paid £400 for a 1st class open return, Plymouth to London  as the boss likes 'flexibility' and is a moneyspending bad**s)

I've also tried to cancel an advance ticket (the cheaper ones with pre booked seats) and they've always said no.

Hope that helps, can't comment on DSR though ;)
That info sounds spot on to me.

It was Consumer Direct who gave me this advice. If you are aware that Distance Selling regulations do not apply to train ticket resellers (i.e. not actual train companies) then please post a link to the relevant law so that we can resolve this issue.

Contracts to which only part of the DSRs apply (Regulation 6)

2.20 The requirements to provide pre-contractual information, written and additional information, the right to cancel and the obligation on the supplier to carry out the contract within a maximum of 30 days do not apply to the following types of contract.

Contracts to provide accommodation, transport, catering or leisure services (for example hotel accommodation; plane, train, or concert tickets; car hire;or sporting events) where you agree to provide the service on a specific date or within a specific period.

The last sentence would also explain why open return tickets are refundable.
