Defective Flannelette Sheet: refund?

Apologies if this is the wrong forum for such a question.
My parents purchased a Napguard Flannelette sheet for me at Christmas from an online retailer. They were washed normally once before use. I have had them on the bed for several (2-3) weeks and they have piled quite heavily to the point they are no longer comfortable to sleep on.
I have contacted the retailer who stated these sheets must be soaked in salt water for 24 hours before use. This instruction was NOT on the sheets themselves, nor on any packaging that came with the sheets. The only reference on the retailers web site states: "Tip for washing soak in salt water for 24 hours before use Then wash out the salt. Stops any shedding." Other retailers selling the same sheets have no such instruction on their site.
Am I right to expect a refund for what appears to be a defective product? Presumably if soaking was an essential care instruction it would be included with the sheet and worded more strongly than a 'Tip'.
Advice appreciated.

If its a required care instruction then it should be provided with the product and not classed as a tip IMO.0

I have had Napguard sheets before and they have always been good and I've never had a problem with them. I have never seen any information about soaking them in salt water and have never done this. Mine have lasted years but, of course, they do flatten and get thinner over time.
As the "tip" was on the retailer's website and nothing on the manufacturer's packaging, then obviously it's not the manufacturer recommending the salt water soak.
I personally would push for a refund.
The only other thing I can think of is whether they have reduced the quality of their sheets recently. I recently looked at some Dorma ones in Makro as I've had Dorma ones before, and the quality was awful compared with previously, whether they would have washed any better I don't know but I didn't risk it, just came away with the opinion that yet again a reliable name seemed to have reduced the quality of their goods.0
