Timer in bathroom

I've just bought a ladder towel rail and element to run off electric only.
There is a suitable fused socket in the bathroom in an ideal location already, however I need to fit a timer. It would be in Zone 3 in the bathroom - does anyone know if I am able to fit an ordinary wired in socket (not plug in) timer here, or do I need to run the cable out of the bathroom into the airing cupboard to house the timer? The socket would be behind full height cupboards in the bathroom, so no chance of touching water and socket at same time.
Thanks
Vikki
