type of mattress for newborn baby

my daughter is expecting a new baby any day now and we've bought a beautiful cot off ebay.
it is larger than a standard cot, but smaller than a cotbed, so baby will be in it til he's about 3 years old.
should we be looking at buying a foam mattress, or a sprung one? is there any difference healthwise or is it just for economy than some people opt for spring mattresses as they are likely to last longer?
many thanks

We bought a foam one which with hindsight was a good choice has been able to go through the washing machine when tummy bugs have hit!!
I think as long as it is breathable it is just personal choice, a baby/young child is so light and flexible they don't need a sprung mattress but then I wouldn't go for a really cheap one either. My sister had a sprung one for her little one and had to get a mattress pad as it was a bit lumpy - the cover wasn't sufficient so that the springs wern't felt through the fabric, and it wasn't a cheap one.
Have a look on www.babycentre.co.uk this is a fab site and gives loads of really good advice.0 -
A good compromise would be a natural filled coir mattress, it has more support than a foam mattress and is breathable. I had them for all 3 of my babies.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

The mattress I had in the cotbed for my daughter is a kind of fibre with a zip off top layer... It did her for over 4 years... And I'll be using the same one for baby 2 due in a couple of months... I'll be washing the outer layer but the insides are fine...A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...My Fathers Daughter wrote: »Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

we have a poscket sprung one - basically a normal bed matress only cot bed sized, i think the cover zips off (spose i should know that!) but we have a mattress protector on it anyway.
just a question from me - what size is the cot? just wondering if it is an odd size will it be easy enough for you to get a mattress for it.
if baby is going to be in it that length of time i wouldn't go for a foam one.DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

I got a sprung mattress for an odd sized cot on there at a very reasonable price. It's got a zip off cover and that goes in the washing machine, and it dries quickly. This is essential as it'll get covered in sick/dribble/wee/poo so you really need something you can wash easily! Here I go again on my own....0 -

I think that's the natual coir (coconut fibre) one isn't it? Was it brown in the middle?Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
I bought ours from http://www.babymattressesonline.co.uk/welcome.html . They can do made to measure, or they have comprehensive list of sizes. I chose to get a cover that zipped off and went in the wash...:DThe IVF worked;DS born 2006.0

Mid priced foam one with a removable cover. You are optimistic thinking a child will be in a cot smaller than a cot bed until they are three. Our daughter, despite being small, was in a full size bed just after her second birthday. No problem on length, but as it was so narrow she didn't fit it properly.0
