garden fence posts

i have a 5 foot high fence in the garden...id like to add some trellis along the top for more privacy

i dont want to yank the posts out and get longer ones , is there a approved way to join a foot of post on top neatly?

    wooden slated jobbie...basicly i need longer posts to add the trellis, was hoping i can join a bit on top

    Metpost do "post extenders" but shop around there's bound to be a cheaper version. BUT maximum permitted height for a boundary fence is 2 metres (1 metre if within 5 metres of a highway). As your fence is already 5 foot high it might not be worth the trouble or expense for these.
