Removals tip

Hi,

I've just made a large saving on the cost of moving our house so I thought I would share.

We've always used a 'man and van' service in the past as I'm able to help load. However the last time we moved we struggled to fit everthing into the luton van, so this time round we thought we would have to get a full removals company in. We got a few quotes which were between £350 - £500. Considering the last move came to £120 i thought this was a bit steep. Anyway, I called our friendly man and van guy to see how much it would cost to do the move in two trips and he suggested we hired another man and van. So now we have two men and two luton vans doing our removals. The best bit is because there are now three of us loading its only going to cost around £200 so we've saved at least £150. Apparently he's moved a large 4 bedroom house this way before with two lutons and a transit van which was quoted at over £1000! We could have saved even more if I had just hired a van but we thought the extra pair of hands would be appreciated.

Anyway thought this may be of use to someone as it never occurred to me.

Even cheaper would be perhaps to hire a van yourself and get a couple of friends to help over a weekend. But heavier bulkier items maybe difficult to move. £100 max i would have thought.

  • I've always moved by hiring a van myself, getting a friend to drive it (as I can't drive) and then getting a couple of friends to help me carry everything. So, the cost has been van hire and then buying a meal/bottle for my friends to say thank you.

However, I now have a small child demanding lots of attention and am contemplating my next move and am considering a removal firm that will pack for me as well as removing. Any tips on finding a good, not too expensive one much appreciated. I don't have much furniture but do have huge amounts of books.

Yep! He didn't say wether he dismantled it or just dug it up and rested it on the vans roofs though.;)

I have looked into hiring a van but to get a Luton costs between £100 and £140 a day around here, and £15 an hour for the man and van plus 50p per mile. It only works out cheaper for us if its going to take 7 hours or more.

On top of that I don't know that many people local to me who would be able to help, the few who do I would feel obliged to offer something in return for helping and would end up costing more anyway.
