Help Please - Search Engine Listing/ Web Promo

Hi, Please excuse me if i've completley overlooked an existing thread on this topic. I did a search under fran's list but it kept comeing back with 'This topic doesn't exist on this board' for the topics i'm interested in.

So to cut a story short...you've guessed it.. i've just launched a new website and would like to know how i submit it to all the good search engines and any other promotional tips or sites.

I've found one post on this board that gave the link to google - so i've submitted that but as for the others none yet.

I looked on Ask Jeeves but couldn't find a direct site area to add my url etc.

Any help mucho appreciated! ;D

Hey fraz,

Since you've moved on to the site submission stage, I'm sure that your site is fully optimised for search engines.

If not I can fully recommend Jill Whalen's site http://www.highrankings.com. She is an expert in SEO and how to get your site listed and listed well.

Secondly, take a look at http://www.cre8asiteforums.com, as they too offer some excellent advise, including surrent trends in SEO and site submission.

Another thing to try is going to Google and searching for the phrase 'submit site' or similar. This should bring up all the submission pages for the various engines. It will also bring up a load of links for 'submit your site to 500 search engines'. Steer clear of these. they generally are charging a fortune for work you can do yourself and are also, in general lying. There are not 500 search engines worth being in!

As you have submitted to Google, you have already got the most important one, but you also have to assess whether it is worth paying to submit to search engines. I would say generally not, but you will have to recognise that this process could take up to two months so be patient!

Also, to get a good ranking, assess your links trategy. Try and find a few, select, like-minded sites which are relevant to your visitors and trade linsk with them. This is a delicate process. Too few links and you won't be on the map, too many and you may be classified as a spammer, but don't be alarmed at this. As long as you are suspicious of claims that seem too good to be true, you should be fine.  ;D

well many thanks for that svmitche

some v. useful pointers there...I'm green to all this so it's one BIG learning curve.

tried the submit site idea and submit url in various other seach engines ie. lycos, jeeves etc but they keep coming back with links for companies that are going to charge you to link to them which is annoying!

Ask Jeeves dropped their paid inclusion in September and have no manual submission. Sites will only be added to Ask Jeeves /Teoma via spidering. Ask Jeeves only accounts for a relatively small amount of searches.

Yahoo (which supplies Yahoo, MSN, Lycos, Altavista, Fast, BBC and others) and Google (Google and AOL) are the two main search engines. MSN's own is in beta and will replace Yahoo results in MSN once the current contract expires (sometime in 2005).
