Would a railway line near house put you off buying?

Hi,

Our house is for sale and I am keeping my eye on what is coming onto the market with the view of them being a possible next home for us.

I have seen a house that is in a bit of an odd position, it is sideways on to the road and the porch is very near the pavement. from the side it looks like a lovely charatcher detatched house. It is on a minor road, on a slight bend. No buses use the road (except odd school buses) but it is used as a through road.

Behind the house are some allotments and behind those is a railway line. Currently trains run Mon-Sat every half an hour. They are not high speed so are not that noisey.

Would that put you off buying a house? Would having the allotments put you off?

To be honest I'm not that bothered, but want to keep in mind problems this may cause if we were to sell at some point in the future.

Your thoughts would be appreciated. :A
I love giving home made gifts, which one of my children would you like? :D :A :D

I might if they ran half an hour all through the night, but otherwise, not if it was a bargain and/or what I needed/wanted.
Cant see allotments being an issue - make friends with the allotment owners and get yourself some free/cheap veg in return for some cups of tea! ;)

I have a railway line at the bottom of my garden and it's the second house I've own with a railway at the bottom it doesn’t worry me much better than a busy main road.

If you search there was a similar thread a few days ago
  • I agree allotments are fine. I would only be concerned if it was right on the railway line or backing on to it. On a funny note I was comming home on the train and the train stopped between stations on a quiet line and a woman was walking around naked in her living room with the curtains open. I think half the train saw her. LOL
  • i live in a terrace house near a main line, when i first moved in i thought that i would get really disturbed by the trains, but you do get used to them and if they aren't very frequent and not very many during the night then its fine. ploblems may arise if frieght trains used the line as they are pretty noise and usually operated during the night.
also if you are near a station this could be a problem as train horns and brake squeel can be big irritators
ref the shower, i have been court out a few times with trains stopping before the station as our bathroom looks out onto the railway and i have been stuck in the shower for a good 5 minutes until it moves off!

The railway line would annoy me. I think the slow moving trains are worse than high speed. They emit a grinding chugging noise rather than a woosh of a intercity. I take the train into town sometimes and wonder who would actually buy one of the flats and apartments we scrape by. It would certainly affect the value of the property.

My Mum bought a sideways on terrace once, it was the end one but instead of a front door the main entrance was on the side with the stairs going up the middle of the house, it made for a spacious house but the garden wasn't private due to the position of the door.

Train lines are ok if they are set back, ensure there aren't any plans to electricify the line or to increase the useage. Then it is personal choice, when selling you will have buyers ask the same questions you are asking.

I went with to view flats with one of my sons a few years back. It was his first property.

We did several in the day that he had short listed and the last one we found was a low building - just two storeys and literally 25 ft from a fast intercity rail line. I tried to keep a straight face but every time a train went by the flat literally shook and rocked and you could see anxious glances between the couple selling it. He didnt buy it :)
  • I've lived right by a railway line. The back garden literally backed onto it. Believe me after a while you don't even notice them going past. I was by a branch line that had between 4-8 trains an hour. They finished at midnight and started at 5.30am. It was quite comforting to hear the last train go past.

I think I'd quite like it.
My partner grew up right under the Manchester airport flight path.
His parents still live there and in summer if you're sat in the garden you have to stop talking every five minutes but after forty years they don't notice it.
Even so, it's still a desirable road and property there gets snapped up.
